Computerised vapor compression type cascade refrigeration system trainer

A cascade refrigeration system consists of two independently operated single-stage refrigeration Systems. A lower system that maintains a lower evaporating temperature and produces refrigeration Effect and a higher system that operates at a higher evaporating temperature. It uses one refrigerant to condense the other primary refrigerant that is operating at the desired evaporator temperature. The Experimental unit provides the basic experiments to know the operating behaviour and the important Characteristic variables; the System comprise the use of different refrigerants in each cycle of the cascade.

Technical Specifications:

1. High cycle Side Compressor: Hermetically sealed, Rotary compressor capacity 1.0 TR.

2. Low cycle Side Compressor: Hermetically sealed, Reciprocating compressor capacity - 0.75 TR.

3. Evaporator: Copper Coil (shell and coil) immersed in insulated water tank of stainless steel 304 grade water tank capacity of 20 ltr.

4. Propylene Glycol to achieve lower temperature by mixing in deionized water 50:50 Ratio per liter.

5. Condenser: Copper 14x14x4 row-1no.

6. Condenser Cooling: Forced air-cooled 12-inch axial fan with variable speed-1no.

7. Cascade Condenser: Brazed Plate Type Heat Exchanger/ Pipe in pipe type-1no.

8. Expansion System Capillary Expansions/ Thermostatic expansion-1no

9. Refrigerant Freon R-600a/290 for lower cycle and R 32 for higher cycle.

Experimental facility:

To determine the Refrigeration effect, Work output, cascade Actual COP, Carnot COP, cascade Theoretical COP, Tonnage of refrigeration. Heat rejection in heat exchanger.

Digital Measurements with data acquisition facility.

1. Digital volts meter, ammeter and energy meter for power input measurements- 2nos

2. Thermocouples Teflon coated (PT-100 type range -50 to 199.9 0C)-12 nos.

3. Liquid filled gauges for HP and LP of refrigerant-4 no’s

4. Refrigerant sight glass -2nos

5. Digital refrigerant flow sensor -2 no’s

6. Pressure transducers- 4 no’s

7. Power input transducer- 2nos

8. Data logger 24 channels with pc interface converter USB and acquisition software.
